EVolocity at STC

EVolocity arrives at STC

In March ... Matt Evans and Andrew Jones took 12 senior boys along to the Ara campus in Christchurch to take part in the EVolocity launch.

EVolocity is a challenge for high school students to design and build an electric vehicle and then race the vehicle against other schools in a regional and even national competitions in November this year.. it is a long term project and it involves designing and building a vehicle as well as marketing it and producing a report about the process.

20 boys from year 11-13 have so far signed up to participate this year and 12 of those boys attended the launch evening. At the launch boys were tasked in converting a regular pedal cycle to electrical power. The boys split into 2 teams and 1 team successfully completed the challenge and got their vehicle to run the course whilst the other team ran out of time. This is just the start for our budding engineers as there will be future events and workshops through the year teaching the boys practical skills in welding and vehicle construction as well as teamwork, project management and use of computer design tools and coding.

The boys also got to check out top of the range electric vehicles from BMW and Tesla on show at the event. This is a great opportunity for our boys to rise to the challenge and a big thanks to Matt Evan for helping the boys participate in this cool event. Keep your eyes out for future updates about the teams progress.
