Justice and Solidarity Leader

Harvey Gordon —

Hi, My name is Harvey Gordon and I had the privilege for being the Justice and Solidarity leader this year at St Thomas of Canterbury College. 2021 was another outstanding year for social justice at the college, setting new records and reaching new heights in our community.

We started the year getting right into things, beginning our shave for a cure campaign early in the first few weeks of term 1. As the days went by, the numbers of boys taking part in the shave and the money we were raising were continuing to rise. We had a record number 68 boys take part, along with 2 brave teachers beside them. We managed to set a school record of $36,611 for Leukemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand, which taught us that you can always strive and achieve the big goals that you set out.

The next big event during the calendar year was the St Vincent De Paul ‘clothing drive’ during special character week. For this event the young men around the college donated clothing to St Vincent De Paul to help those in need of some warm clothes for the winter season. This event was a huge success, as the school came together to raise 1244 pieces of clothing for St Vincent De Paul. This was a great team effort from the men around the college willing to give forward clothes to those in need. This event saw our school rise as one and thrive as one.

Thank you to all of those who got involved this year, making a difference in people’s lives. The social justice events are a great way to give back to our community, so we invite you all to get involved in 2022. Many records were broken this year, so let’s continue to do that moving forward and keep making these incredible events bigger and better!
