The Calling 2023

Year 10 Rite Journey - The Calling 2023

The Calling 2023

Early in March all Year 10 akonga and their parents made their way up to the top of the Port Hills at the Sugar Loaf Scenic Reserve for the first ritual of the year ‘The Calling’. The weather gods must have been on our side for the morning as the drizzle quickly disappeared and a beautiful sunrise greeted us all.

The purpose of The Calling ritual was to be present in a moment of reflection as the boys looked back at the past, thought about the people who have gotten them through tough times, and move towards opening a new chapter in the journey to manhood. After the sunrise we all made our way back to school for some breakfast, and Louie Gordon, our college captain, spoke to the boys around the importance of being present and shared his own ups and downs throughout his journey to being a Year 13 student. This speech perfectly linked us to the final part of The Calling ceremony where each student took their parents away to read their gratitude letters that they had been constructing over the past two weeks in class. This was to detail in words their gratefulness and gratitude for everything they had done in getting them to where they are today.

Thanks to all the staff who attended and helped out with the event. Also to the Parent and Friends Association (PFA) who set up and prepared the breakfast for the morning.

Make sure you check out the video below! Also attached below is a passage that was read out to reflect on, on Wednesday morning. It is from a book titled ‘Be Brave Boys’.
