Learning Support Sewing Skills!

Sewing

During Term 1 and Term 2, some of our learning support boys found a talent they previously never had.

We started by getting a variety of fabrics and tested to see how strong each were. We also conducted some tests to look at how the different fabrics burned approaching a flame, what each looked like burning, and what the ash looked and felt like.

Eamon was the only one who had previously used a sewing machine and had some knowledge of sewing straight lines.

Each boy did a sample using a sewing machine before creating their shopping bags. To create their shopping bags, they each learnt how to lay out the fabric and pin the pattern along the grain of the fabric, after having learnt more about sewing machines and the different settings and hand movements (turning the handles the correct way was an interesting task as none of the boys had done this before).

Peter learnt how to stop if he knew he was going wrong, as well as how handy a quick unpick is.

Overall, it was not long before the shopping bags were complete and there were smiles of delight having seen the final product.
