TEN SUPER DUPER MOVEMENT IDEAS... for wiggly jiggly lockdown kids

Kate Sharrock —

*ANIMAL WALKS*

On the way to the bathroom to clean teeth, bedroom for rest, out the door, on a walk - wherever you are, call out different animals and together walk the walk.
Try these... caterpillar; monkey; crab; chicken; duck; horse; snake; penguin; spider; fish; kangaroo... and many more!

*FOLLOW THE LINES*

Using chalk, draw shapes that overlap on the concrete. Call out one shape. Have children skip, heel to toe, walk sideways, hop, moon hop around that shape. This helps them develop visual discrimination.

*TONG PICKUP JUNK*

Gather some 'junk' from around the home. For instance pegs, toy cars, blocks, feathers and anything that can be picked up with some kitchen tongs. Have the child sit cross legged with a bucket on one side and the 'junk' on the other. Have the child reach across their body, pick up a piece of junk and drop it in the bucket. Try the other hand.

*TV BALANCING*

Come up with some different ways to sit while watching TV. Here's a few ideas... Upside down on the couch; bottom balance; balance on elbows and knees; plank...
Have children come up with some different ideas.
BTW - this doesn't have to happen while the TV is on!!!!

*WALL WALK*

Shoes off for this one!
Have the child stand against a bare wall ankles close in to the wall. Child bends down and places hands on the floor and begins to walk feet up the wall until legs are straight. (Support the child if needed). Then gently walk feet back down.
Extra for experts - use the timer. How long can you stay there?

*SQUASH THE PLAYDOUGH COOKIES*

Roll play dough in to round balls pretending to make cookies. Have children find different ways to flatten the cookies ready for the oven, without using hands. They might like to borrow a thumb or foot from a buddy. Here are some suggestions... knees; wrists; elbows; thumbs; wrists. Be inventive.

*BALLOON & BUCKET CATCH*

Children work in pairs. One child holds a bucket. The other child throws the balloon in in to the air. The child with the bucket moves to catch the balloon in the bucket.
Swap roles.

*SOCK AMNESTY*

Gather all the 'orphan' socks you can find. First have children sort them in to pairs. Then roll pairs together. Stand back (about 1m) and have child throw in to the washing basket. Use different throws... underarm, over the shoulder, between the legs, backwards, sideways. Wonder out loud... "I wonder how else I could throw the socks?"

*SAUSAGE ROLLS*

Use a piece of material or large towel. This is the pastry. Child (the sausage) lies on the top of the 'pastry' and holds the edge. Child rolls using a 'pencil roll' until the pastry covers the sausage! Ensure the child's head is outside of the pastry at all times! Don't forget to roll the other way.

*PLANK THROW*

Gather up 'junk' from around home - for instance... pegs, toy cars, blocks, feathers, old keys and anything that can be picked up easily with one hand. Draw a large circle on the ground close to the child. Have the child make a plank , pick up one piece of 'junk' at a time and throw it into the circle. Encourage a personal best. How many pieces of junk can the child throw while maintaining 'plank' position?
