Exploring Our Curriculum

Lucy Naylor —

Thank you to everyone who came along to the parent information evening where we presented and discussed the SBS curriculum.

This week I would like to share a summary of the evening, it is a broad overview, and it is intended to whet your appetite for future information evenings!

Our vision drives the SBS curriculum. This is our long term, high-level goal for the future. This is what we will achieve if we successfully implement our strategy. Our vision is;

'Growing confident, creative and curious learners who are connected to the community and the wider world.'

Embedded in the school's culture and fundamental to the curriculum's implementation are the school values - respect, resilience and integrity. These values are what we live and breath every day in all that we do - the values underpin behaviour and expectations of all those within our learning community.

We also have the SBS Graduate Profile. These are the learner dispositions that we believe students need to thrive as learners and in life. Our aim is for all students to leave SBS as confident, creative, connected learners and critical thinkers. This is what success looks like for us. We want students at SBS to be empowered as learners who can collaborate, be creative and innovative, independent and deep thinkers. Having the graduate profile as a foundation to our curriculum means that we offer a well-rounded education that grows the child - academically, socially and emotionally.

To achieve success, we use a 'learning powered' approach. We teach knowledge, the fast-flowing daily content of lessons, and instil the ability to understand and make sense of that knowledge. We work hard to help students develop a growth mindset, embrace challenge and be solutions focused. We want to embed deep learning and attitudes for life in a joyful learning environment and spark curiosity and wonder.

At SBS, learning is about growing intrinsic motivation to participate and contribute to society. It is about being successful as an individual, whatever path they choose to follow. This is a learning-powered approach.

To find out more about the learning-powered approach, go to - Building Learning Power.

Next term, we look forward to inviting you to find out what the learning-powered approach looks like in the context of maths. The evening will show you how we teach the skills, knowledge and dispositions to enable students to be competent mathematicians.

Congratulations to our new FOSB Chair

I am delighted to announce that we have a new FOSB Chair. This year the position will be shared between Bianca O'Dea (Mother of Denim Nuttal, R7) and Rebecca Newman (Mother of Carter Davis, R1). One of the aims of FOSB is to raise community spirit and I am sure with Bianca and Rebecca at the helm we have an exciting year ahead!

You are invited to come along to an informal meeting of FOSB on Thursday 15 April, at 9 am in the staff room. We look forward to introducing Bianca and Rebecca and also having a quick recap of what is coming up in 2021.

With the Stampede just around the corner, there are plenty of things to do! Come along and support the committee and find out how you can get involved.

In term 2,  FOSB Meeting will be on Thursday 13 May, 7 pm in the school staffroom.

Looking After Our School

In term 4, after a spate of vandalism, we reached out to the community and asked for vigilance to look after our school. Thanks to your proactive we have managed to stamp out the vandalism. This is fantastic news!

The final step in eliminating damage to the school grounds is to ask you to remind your children that skateboarding on the deck areas outside of school hours is not permitted.

Stanley Bay Stampede

Planning is underway for the Stanley Bay Stampede - our biggest fundraising event and a whole lot of community FUN!

To make this event a success we are looking for:

  • a qualified Site Management Traffic Supervisor (SMTS) who can provide signage and implement the traffic management plan.
  • businesses to sponsor obstacles. This is a really fun and enjoyable way to promote your business to the wider community!
