Hybrid Learning

Lucy Naylor —

As we are seeing an increasing number of Covid cases in the community, we can expect to have changeable teaching and learning circumstances in the coming weeks and maybe months, due to students and staff absences.

What is hybrid learning?

When students and staff need to isolate but are well, they should still expect to be able to teach and learn. This will require an approach to learning that includes online, remote, face to face and onsite learning so that learners can transition between settings with minimal interruption to their learning. Learning delivered in multiple modes is commonly know as hybrid learning. This is an educational approach in which schools (not necessarily the same teacher) provide remote and onsite learning at the same time, using a range of technologies and approaches.

We have been preparing for this eventuality. Below is a broad overview of our approach.

Definitions

  • Online learning - learning that is accessed via the internet at home or onsite
  • Remote learning - learning that takes place at home either online or on paper
  • Face to face - learning that takes place with the teacher either online or onsite
  • Onsite learning - learning that takes place onsite

2022 HYBRID LEARNING PLAN

Our Aim

  • To keep the school fully open for as many students as possible

  • To provide quality online teaching and learning for our students who are waiting for a Covid test or self-isolating
  • Actively encourage all students to participate in learning opportunities

How do I access online/remote Learning?

Each teaching team has a ‘Hail Page’ (the same platform we use for newsletters), this is your one-stop-shop for class timetables which include Zoom links, resources and useful information. If your child is self-isolating, you can access online remote learning by clicking on the links below.

You will also need to email your child's class teacher for their passwords and logins needed to access some online learning

When does online/remote learning start?

From Monday 7 March, we will move to Step 1 of our hybrid learning model. This means that if your child is self-isolating or awaiting a test you can join the online class.

What can I expect from Step 1 online/remote learning?

Step 1 online/remote learning will be taught by Suzanne Stickney, who is new to SBS but many of you will know from the community. We are extremely fortunate and grateful to Suzanne for stepping into this role.

Step 1 learning can be accessed here - Timetable (7-11 March)

STEP 1 LEARNING TIMETABLE

Each day there is a morning meeting from 9 to 10 am. Suzanne will be online to welcome students, give them a chance to connect with each other and answer any online/remote learning questions you may have.

After the morning meeting, students are able to;

  • Year 3 to 6 - complete self-selected tasks from their taskboard, complete set tasks on IXL, Seesaw and ReadWorks

  • Year 0 to 2 – hard packs can be collected from the school by prior arrangement. For some students, Seesaw work will also be available.

This will be followed by an online afternoon session which will include art, technology and interactive, hands-on learning

What next?

As we move through the steps of our hybrid learning model we will communicate what is coming next.
