Make an origami boat and join the flotilla in Devonport

Rachael Hamilton —

Decorate and improve your boat with your own creative genius! Templates will be coming home with your child by the end of the week.

Take your boat to Devonport Library or Torpedo Bay Navy Museum and join the Auckland Heritage Festival flotilla 23 September - 8 October.

Flotilla celebrates Devonport's significant role in the anti-nuclear movement spanning 1973 to 1987. The highlight of Flotilla will be a collection of origami boats, created and decorated by students from local schools. Visitors to Flotilla will be able to make their own origami boats to add to the fleet. Download instructions or visit https://www.flotilla.nz/

Using large-scale posters and interactive displays, Flotilla will showcase a timeline of key events that occurred near Devonport including HMNZS Otago setting sail to protest French nuclear testing at Mururoa in 1973, Devonport Borough Council's nuclear-free declaration in 1981, protests on the Waitemata Harbour during the USS Texas' visit to Auckland in 1983, the sinking of the Rainbow Warrior in 1985 and events leading to New Zealand becoming a nuclear-free zone in 1987.
