A Culture of Learning

Lucy Naylor —

This year we have begun working on Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L). This is a Ministry of Education initiative that aims to improves the behaviour and wellbeing of children.

Positive behavior is a prerequisite to improving the engagement and achievement of our students. It is about creating a school-wide culture where student learning is optimized and positive behaviour is a way of life.

PB4L looks at behaviour and learning from a whole-of-school as well as an individual child's perspective. It’s about changing the environment, systems, and practices we have in place to support students to make positive behaviour choices. For our students, it is how we collectively embody the school values of respect, resilience, and integrity. We hope that by making the values increasingly visible and meaningful we will increase opportunities for learning because:

  • expectations are consistently clear
  • students are consistently taught desired behaviours
  • students are consistently acknowledged for desired behaviours and undesirable behaviours are responded to in a fair and equitable way.
  • the school environment is positive and supportive

By ensuring that our learning environment has a strong foundation in the school values, learning time will be optimised - teachers can spend more time teaching and students will be increasingly engaged and achievement will be accelerated. A positive outcome for all!

Calling All Library Books!

We are so excited to finally have our library back in action. It is such a valuable learning resource for the children. However, it is looking a little sad, as there are many many books missing. Please, please, please can you have a hunt at home and return any books to the office - no questions asked!

Congratulations to our Speech Finalists

Last week we held the school speech competition, many of the speeches had been worked on and perfected during lockdown and the hard work was evident in the engaging, informative and humorous speeches.

Congratulations to Cuinin Borrella and Dorethea Waldron who will be representing Stanley Bay at the Peninsula Speech finals on Tuesday. I am sure they will do us proud.

Teachers Only Day

Please note the date for the next Teachers Only Day will be the Tuesday after Labour Day - 27th October 2020.

Building Update

Good news! The builders have completed the classroom modernisation. All classes are now back in the 'right' places, the spaces look incredible. We can't wait for you to be able to have a look.

The second project began last Monday, this is the hoarding you can see from Russell Street. This project is to upgrade areas of the school to ensure that we are 'access enabled' and can provide an environment for children who have mobility challenges. The work is largely external and will not impact the classroom spaces.  The main scope of works is an upgrade of the steps and decking outside Room 13, replacement of stairs by Room 7/pool, and installation of access enabled bathroom by Room 4.

Much of the work will be completed in the holidays to ensure minimal disruption to teaching and learning.

___________

This week we welcomed Scott (Deputy Principal) to our team, he is looking forward to getting to know the students and their families so if you see him on the crossing or out and about please give him a wave or introduce yourself.

As always if you have any questions or feedback, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Nga mihi
