2020 Class Placement and Structure

Lucy Naylor —

It is the time of year when we are beginning the process of placing children in classes for 2020. This is a robust and structured process where teachers work collaboratively using their expertise, experience, and knowledge of your child to ensure that they will be placed in the best learning environment for their needs.

To place children in a class we use the following process;

  • Teachers work together to place children in classes. To do this they consider academic data,  maturity, specific learning needs, friendships, relationship with the teacher and any information that will support a positive placement.
  • Teachers ask some children to identify learning buddies. These are students who they can learn with and may not necessarily be friendship groups. The students are made aware that these choices are not guaranteed.
  • Initial class lists are drafted taking into account teacher and student comments.
  • The Leadership Team (Team Leaders, Deputy Principal, Principal) review the placements and makes changes based on additional information they may have.
  • Teachers and the Leadership team collaboratively review the class lists and make any changes necessary.
  • As the term progresses the Teachers and Leadership team continue to edit the class lists to ensure the best possible placements.
  • Final class placement information will be sent home with the end of year report.

What happens next?

The next step in preparation for 2020 will take place on Monday 16 December when children will be given the opportunity to meet their 2020 teachers and classmates. We hope by introducing children to their new teacher and classmates the transition from one year to the next is smooth. On the same day, your child will bring home their End of Year Report and a letter informing you of the teacher your child will have for 2020.

We appreciate this can be an anxious time for parents, however, we ask that you trust us in this process and can be assured that we will make every effort to place your child with the teacher who we feel is most appropriate to ensure that they have a productive and positive 2020.
