Matariki Carving
Last week Matua Natanahira, a master carver from Lake House Arts Centre and ten Devonport Primary children supported by Jill Cahill came to Stanley Bay to begin a Matariki art project with ten of our own senior students.
Rooms 4 and 7 welcomed our visitors with a mini Mihi Whakatau. We loved singing our school song for Devonport and listening to theirs in response.
Each group of children will practice carving over the next few weeks, then the school gets a giant panel to carve as one of seven panels telling a Matariki story. These painted and finished panels will go to the Bayswater Matariki Festival to create a giant fluro light show on June 24th. What a cool long-term community project!
Mrs Cahill reported that we can be very proud of our senior students who were so switched on and conducted themselves beautifully, ka pai!
