Sharing our learning!

Lucy Naylor —

As we approach the middle of the school year we encourage students to reflect on their progress and identify some learning challenges for the remainder of the school year.

In the coming weeks, there will be several opportunities for you to share in your child's learning. Children love sharing their successes (and challenges) with their parents and family, this, in turn, has a positive impact on their progress and achievement. Here is how we will be sharing our learning:

Open Afternoon

On Thursday 27 June, 2 to 3 pm you are invited to come along and spend the afternoon with us! The classes will be open for you to wander through and see what we have all been up to... science experiments, new planets, rocket art and so much more ... prepare yourself to be amazed by our scientific expertise!

Parent Information Evening:
Student-Led Learning

Also on Thursday 27 June, 6.30 to 7.30pm we will be hosting a parent information evening which will focus on student-led learning.

Research shows that effective reporting involves students taking increasing responsibility for his or her own learning. We will explain how we support students so that they are clear about what they have learnt, which learning strategies were successful and what they need to focus on next.

We will talk about the evidence and data teachers use to make an overall judgement to determine your child's progress. The evening will provide you with the background to help understand the mid-year reports and learner led conferences.

Mid Year Written Report

On 1 July your child will bring home their mid-year written report. You will notice that some elements of the mid-year report have been written collaboratively with the students and contains information about their progress and achievement against the NZ Curriculum as well as the Graduate Profile and school values.  An explanation of the report content will be included in the envelope with your child’s report.

Learner Led Conferences

To support the written report early in term 3 we will be holding Learner Led  Conferences. This will be an opportunity for your child and their teacher to share with you the data and evidence that they used to inform the levels of attainment and comments on the report.

It is important to actively involve students in the reporting process, this reflects the intent of the NZ Curriculum and is consistent with characteristics of effective assessment. Through the process, students learn to accept accountability and responsibility for their progress and achievement and demonstrate a growing understanding of their development as independent learners. Learner-led conferences are designed to;

  • help students demonstrate evidence of learning
  • teach students the process of reflection and self-evaluation
  • facilitate the development of students' organisational and oral communication skills and to increase their self-confidence
  • encourage students, parents, and teachers to engage in open and honest dialogue
  • encourage students to accept personal responsibility for their learning
  • increase parent understanding of their child’s learning

Finally, as part of the schools' annual review process, at the learner Led Conferences you will have the chance to complete a short survey which will ask for feedback about how we share learning.  This is a great opportunity for you to help us shape how we report your child's progress and achievement in the future.

Kahui Ako Choral Performance

A big thank you to Lisa G and Katie C from room 4 who represented Stanley Bay as part of the Devonport peninsula collective choir. The choir was made up of representatives from all of the local schools and welcomed 270 delegates to the Kahui Ako Conference. Well done, you did Stanley Bay proud!

Chess Regional Competition

Good luck to our chess team who have qualified for the Auckland regional competition which is to be held on Monday 17 June. I am sure there will be some strong competition ... but the team is ready!

Bayswater Matariki Festival

On Saturday 15 June, our Kapa Haka group will be performing at the Bayswater Matariki Festival. Our tamariki have been practising hard and have a fabulous performance lined up, they are performing at approx 5.30pm. The festival is a great family event and well worth a visit so why not bring the family for an afternoon of entertainment and fun!

Finally, we look forward to seeing you for a night of dancing and fun at the disco, don't forget once you have dropped your children to the hall you are welcome to join the Board for drinks in the library.
