Art Gallery Trip

Rachel McDonnell —

Ropu Pihinga (Year's 3 and 4) had a well timed trip to Auckland's Art Gallery as part of Term 3's art inquiry.

This Term the children are investigating the ways that stories can be told through art. During our trip we found out that you can find clues in a piece of art which give you more idea of the story which the artist is telling. For example, we saw an abstract wooden sculpture of a person in the Art Gallery. When we found out that it was a sculpture of Tane, we realised that the artist was telling the story of Tane pushing his parents, Ranginui and Papatuanuku, apart, so that the world could be created.

Here are some of Room 4's thoughts on their trip:

My favourite piece of art was “Lost”. It was an abstract painting with blue and silver on it. I enjoyed hearing the story behind the painting. It was about the artist getting lost and not being able to find his car in the middle of the big city. It was big. My favourite thing about the art gallery was how colourful it was. I enjoyed the many different types of art both old and new.

Once, I went on a trip to the art gallery, there was so much there. I saw beautiful paintings, story's and sculptures. It was AMAZING!!!!
