Metre Squared Project Field Trip

Rm 7 and 8 —

Metre Squared Survey Field Trip

By Asa K

Last Tuesday room 7 and 8 went to the rock pools on King Edward Parade.

We had already talked to a marine biologist named Teresa Morrell about what kinds of animals and plant we would find at the beach.

When we went to the beach we looked to find as many living organisms as we could in a meter square of the rock pools

We measured the amount of living organisms in a meter square of the rock pools.

The marine biologist Teresa Morrell came with us to the beach with most of the stuff we needed for the survey.

We found Crabs, chiton, sea anemones, cushion starfish, sea snails.

We are now preparing are own questions and answers for own inquiry.

Last week on tuesday we went to king Edward parade with room 8 and Teresa Morell from the Otago University. The week before we went we had a zoom with Teresa to know about the 1 metre squared project. On the day we had to walk all the way to the beach. When we got there we had fruit snack and then Teresa told us what to do and how to do it. After a bit we got into our groups and then started doing the survey. In my group we found lots of cushion starfish, sea snails, hermit crabs, and we even found one sea anemone.

We had a sheet that we had to fill out as well. Once everybody was done we went to the park for lunch and then had a play afterwards. Then we started to walk back to school to upload the data onto the chromebooks. Now we are going to do our own inquiry.

Last Tuesday, room 7 and 8 went to King Edward parade with a biologist from Otago University called Teresa Morrell so we could see what biodiversity lives there. To prepare a week before we went to the beach we had a zoom call with Teresa so she could tell us about what sort of things we might find there. When we went to King Edward parade Teresa gave us metre square so we could find out what biodiversity lives in our metre square.

We had to fill out a sheet so we knew how many different animals and seaweeds we found. We also used a rocky shore guide.

Last week on Tuesday the 16th of May rooms 7 and 8 went to King Edward parade. A couple days before we had zoomed a biologist called Teresa Morrell. About 1 or 2 weeks later we did a Bioblitz where we would get into group and walk round quarters of the school scanning and looking for animals and plants.

Ok, now we can talk about that king Edward Parade beach trip. We went there so we could learn about biodiversity. We climbed onto the rocks and did a metre square survey.

Teresa Morrell came and helped us with that.We found lots of sea creatures, a very common one we found was lots and lots of crabs a few people found starfish, one group found a massive shrimp, it’s head was about as big as the top of my finger!

Now we are planning our own inquiry!
