Life Education Sessions

Scott Boniface —

As part of delivering the Health and PE curriculum at Stanley Bay, we have the Life Education Mobile classroom and their team on site to deliver exciting and highly engaging lessons.

The main focus areas for our students are as follows:

Years 0-2 will cover the following Curriculum Strands:

· Personal growth and development

· Relationships with Other People

· Healthy Communities & Environments

What does our body need to stay happy and healthy?

We explore the ways in which we can contribute to our own health and well-being. We also describe the job of the brain, heart, lungs and stomach and the various functions and their importance to the body.

What makes me a good friend?

We look into the qualities of friendship - caring, sharing, helping, accepting difference and interacting in a positive way. We also learn how to deal with disagreements and not "fall out", looking at the problems we might have with our friends and how we can try to solve them ourselves.

Years 3-4 will explore the following curriculum strands:

· Personal growth and development

· Positive attitudes

· Relationships with other people

How can we stay happy and healthy?

We explore the work done by important parts of our bodies and the need to keep them fit and healthy. We will also find out how to make responsible choices and decisions and facing increased responsibilities and self-worth.

How do we change as we get older?

We discuss staying healthy and how feeling your best is important at any age and as we grow older, we experience an increasing number of major life changes. How we handle and grow from these changes is the key to staying healthy. We will look at ways to cope with change; appreciate what you have, express feelings, accept things you can’t change - discussing resilience, finding a physical activity that appeals, understanding the importance of friendship and focusing on our basic needs.

Years 5-6 will cover the following Curriculum Strands:

· Personal Health & Physical Development

· Personal growth and development

· Regular physical activity

What are the different body systems and how do they work? Why is physical activity good for our bodies?

We learn why our bodies are special and unique and have different needs to keep them functioning. We continue to develop our understanding of how our brain controls our body, as well as exploring the Nervous, Circulatory, Respiratory, Digestive and Skeletal systems. Students will be able to describe how these systems work together as well as naming basic body needs and explaining why we have them. We also focus on our body's need for physical activity and the effect this has on the different systems.
