Room 4 and 6's Trip to the Beach

Rm 4 and 6 —

Last week on Monday and Tuesday Room 4 and 6 went to Stanley Bay Beach and to the rock pools at the northern end of Takapuna beach.

We were joined at Stanley Bay Beach by Teresa from the New Zealand Marine Studies Centre in Otago. She showed us how to use metre squared quadrats to record all the living things we could find at different places on the shore. We found some really cool things like nudibranchs, ambush stars, shrimp and different types of algae. We loved exploring and were super curious about the things we discovered. We entered the data we collected into the Marine Metre Squared website. We will use this data and the questions we have thought of to guide our learning for the rest of the term. Thank you so much to all of the parents that came along to help on both days, it was very much appreciated!

At Stanley Bay Beach we found hermit crabs, some seaweed and a lot of mud. Then we went to Takapuna Beach and we got there on a bus. We were doing the meter-squared project. Our inquiry was all about being a scientist so that's why we were there. We went there with Room 6 and Room 4 parents and teachers.

Yesterday I went to Takapuna Beach. I saw a starfish and a shrimp and I saw seaweed. The seaweed was green. We went to the beach for an experiment and to be a scientist. I went there with Room 6 and Room 4.- Lulah S Rm 6

We went to Takapuna Beach on Tuesday. We went there because being scientists was our inquiry. We found a starfish and 100 crabs and a hermit crab and a dead fish. We found chitons and sea snails and Neptune's Necklace.- Sebby B Rm 6

I picked up a purple crab in the rock pools. It almost pinched me. It felt slimy. It was one angry crab. I was happy to put it back. It looked like a purple rock. It's face looked funny. I saw a fin and at first I thought it was a shark but when it poked its head out it was a shag. I saw a fish bone. It had creatures living on it.                                     By Lola RC Rm 4

At the rock pools you will find a crab and fish and starfish and sea squirts and seaweed. It was fun and I liked it. By Casper H Rm 4

I saw an orange starfish. The starfish puts its points on the rocks and it goes down in the water to catch its food. I saw a black shag. Some of my friends thought it was a shark. I saw a fish. It was a dead fish.                           By Annika Bera Rm 4
