Pepeha

Rachael Hamilton —

Last week was Māori Language Week. This special week is an opportunity to celebrate and promote the everyday use of te reo Māori at home, school or work. A great exercise to practice this, is to create your own pepeha.

Pepeha is a way of introducing yourself in Māori. It tells people who you are by sharing your connections with the people and places that are important to you. We acknowledge the mountain and river we identify most with, where we come from and where we live now, who our whānau are, and finally our name.

A pepeha helps to give a person a sense of meaning and connection to their immediate and wider family and their place of belonging.

Have a look at these ka rawe (awesome) pepeha's created by Stanley Bay students.

Click here for Saoirse H's (Rm 7) pepeha and please see Zoe F from Rm 9's presentation attached below.

If you haven't already, this is a great website to help create your first pepeha.
