Senior Basketball at Stanley Bay School

Ethan Rasmussen —

A big congratulations to the Celtics, a senior boys basketball team which has won the A grade basketball tournament.

The team has been working hard, making their way through the playoffs to finally encounter Northcote in the final. The boys team was down 2-10 after the first quarter and thought it was all over. But the boys showed incredible resilience and defence, bouncing back strong and leveling the game by halftime. Thanks to the focused, tenacious and brave defence, the boys managed to secure a 26-14 win which was one of the most thrilling matches I’ve ever seen. A massive congratulations to all the players, their victory was well earned.

With almost 30 senior students taking part this year, Stanley Bay has fielded 3 competitive senior basketball teams in the YMCA Primary School competition. We have been incredibly blown away by the resilience shown among all the basketball players this year as they battled through covid restrictions and for most, taking on the challenge of learning a new sport. The senior Wolves and Flames were mostly made up students who had never played before. Each week they competed with passion and pride. A special mention to the Flames who made it to the semi finals, being a team of girls who were completely new to the sport. Most weeks the girls would take on boys teams and often came away with the win.

A big shout out also to all the parents who made it possible with managing, scorekeeping and carpooling - could not have had such a great season without all their support and participation. Nga mihi.
