Stanley Bay get the W

Scott Boniface —

On Friday, 19th May, Stanley Bay hosted the annual peninsula chess tournament in our school hall.

We had a massive turnout of 43 players, aged from Years 4-6, who managed to stay focussed for the entire day in what turned out to be a successful event for our tamariki.

After some fascinating games, some wins and some losses, SBS Team A were announced as the overall winner. This means that 10 SBS students will progress to the Regional finals at Whangaparoa School on Monday, 24th July.

They are as follows:

  1. Charlie Brown
  2. Toma Wilson
  3. Roman Garland
  4. Maisy Wu
  5. Tom Broomby-Garrod
  6. Dane Seaburg
  7. Bailey Gray
  8. Toby Porter
  9. Tom Newman
  10. Eva Delaney

We also had 3 out of the top 10 individual players on the day, and they were:

  • 2nd - Charlie Brown
  • 3rd - Toma Wilson
  • 5th - Roman Garland

Congratulations to you all. Simply fantastic results!!

Players from other peninsular schools represented their kuras well, with Devonport Primary coming in a close second. Last year Stanley Bay finished third overall, so this result significantly improved from 2022.

A massive thank you to Cath McNellan for her organisation, supply of tea and biscuits for the payers and guest adults, and supervision on the day.

Well done to all our players for showcasing our school so well and getting the impressive WIN!!

Bring on the Regional finals…..watch this space!!
