Cross Country - what a race!

Karyn Barnes-Pownall —

The annual Cross Country was held on Monday after a 'false start' due to the weather last week. Well done to all those who showed commitment & resilience by participating. Check out the results and some of the children's writing below.

Once a year, when the days become cold, the whole school goes down for cross country. I dreamed of cross country. I was always excited to run. When the day came I was glad to hear Mrs Pelham’s clappers, Mrs Pelham’s voice over the megaphone and everyone cheering.  At the start, my legs turn to jelly and my whole body starts to fill up with energy. The race starts, I try and stay up in the top five. Going up the hill. Turning the corner. Heading along Glen road. Seeing the finish line. Now, darting to it, everyone cheering. Sprinting to the end.  By Calliope B, Rm 10

Clap! Off I go. I turn. Trying to beat everyone. Still 6 people in front of me. My chest running ahead of me. My legs dragging behind me. Darting across the track. The speed you’re going at snatches your breath away. Sprinting to the finish line. Finally it’s over I sighed. This all happened yesterday afternoon at 2.00.  By Sophia V, Rm 10

On a cloudy afternoon we all line up to do cross country. On the race before our turn I am practically shaking with excitement. I am also very nervous. It’s finally our turn to run. Bang! Goes the clappers Mrs Pelham is holding. I run with Lucas for a bit with the cold icy wind brushing against my face. Then out of the blue Lucas zooms past me. So I try to catch up with Thomas. It’s halfway through the cross country and I am super puffed.

I’m reaching the finish line and …. I make it! I come 10th out of 18 boys. The muddy ground snatches my feet away.  By Michael H, Rm 10

It’s a Monday afternoon, through the megaphone comes the unmistakable voice of Mrs Pelham. “Nine year old boys” she announced. As I make my way up to the starting line my heart thumps around inside my chest like a pig stuck in a sack. “On your marks, get set, BANG! We all sprint away from the cheering audience. My feet pound the concrete and my mouth clogs up with saliva. I just wish this torture would stop. I turn the final corner, the audience screams. Three metres, two, one, done. I sit down and flop onto the grass, I feel like I’m dead.  By Lucas K, Rm 10

Whoo whoo whooooo!!! I can hear the crowd cheering the 9 year old girls have just finished. We are up next, the 10 year old boys. It’s all tense. BANG! Off go the clappers. The 10 year old boys are off. Yess I’m not last. I finish a lap and there are the 10 year old girls, they have just been started off. Puff, puff, I am very tired but half a lap to go. Coming down the final straight. 7th! Yesss, 2nd reserve for Interschool, what a race!  Noah P, Rm 7

On Monday, it was cross country. I had to run with the 10 & 11 year olds. It was very risky for me because I kept thinking that I would come last and that nobody would cheer for me. But while I was running, I felt my confidence come up to me, so I kept running until the finish line. I don’t really know what place I came, but I just cared that I ran.  Lan Anh, Room 7
