Onepoto Cultural Festival

Karyn Barnes-Pownall —

Last Friday forty-five children from SBS attended the festival hosted by Onepoto Primary School in Northcote.

At the edge of the stage, you look out on a world of cheering people.  At the edge of the stage, you hear beautiful songs and powerful hakas coursing from behind you.  As you wait for your turn, you bathe in the warm sun.  As you wait, you see girls with bright dresses and boys with no shirts.  As you climb the steps, time slows down.  As you climb, you are excited and nervous all at once.  When you sing, the words flow through the air. They touch the hearts of those who hear.  The sun is your spotlight, you are on top of the world.  Everyone is cheering for you and your school.  When the song ends, it seems like the day has gone too fast.  An amazing moment, now just memories.  By Ivy D, room 10

At the start of Onepoto, the world begins.  At the start of Onepoto, everyone is nervous.  Kids rush past the tents at the speed of light.  Adults buying food and drinks for their kids.  In the boiling sun, eating a packed lunch.  Practicing all day long.  Walking up to the stage without even thinking.  Different schools starting their songs.  Feet stamping on the stage, left, right and centre.  Boys screaming their lungs off all over the place.  When it all ends, the day is gone.  The end of Onepoto.  By Eddie, room 10.
