Term 2 Food and Nutrition - Off to a Healthy Start!

Kat Harpur —

This term the Year 13's are investigating the influence of McDonalds on New Zealand Families eating patterns. It seems that they know quite a lot about this already and are certainly educating me (Ms Harpur)! I have been shocked to discover the far reaching influences of multinational food corporations in New Zealand.

The photo of the Year 9's is testament to the importance of studying this unit). We aim to visit McDonalds and explore the practices that they get up to. We will also be trying out best to cook healthy versions of Mc Donalds foods during practical lessons and be looking at other healthier alternatives.

The Year 12's are diving into Sports Nutrition and exploring the nutritional needs of athletes. Their task this term will be to profile an elite athlete in their chosen sport and provide healthy suggestions for food choices as well as personal, interpersonal and societal health promoting strategies. We have a dietician coming to visit us to gain more insight into Sports Nutrition and this will offer the learners an opportunity to get deeper into answering the questions around Carbohydrate myths. We kicked the term off by sampling scorched almonds as a snack food and then made our own healthy alternatives of bliss balls. (I was impressed with the creativity that came out).
