Aerobic Regionals:

We had 30 athletes compete at the NZCAF Regional competition, with 10 of our students also taking on coaching responsibilities. The students performed with mana and manaakitanga, and showed huge respect for the other teams! 23 out of our 30 who competed, qualified for Nationals. Such amazing results. Our aerobics 'whānau' were also amazing, with parents/caregivers/siblings stepping up to help out at the comp. A huge thank you to all those who helped out. And to Mrs Badcock, Mrs McMillan and Miss Cowie who came along to support the SHCS team, and bring Miss Geary some caffeine.

Rugby - HIGHLANDERS FINAL

Match Summary - St Hilda's Collegiate First XV vs Southland Girls High 22.8.22 (written by Grant Milne) - Score 38-5 in favour of St Hilda's Collegiate.

I love how every week this team approaches new challenges with absolute positivity and works together every step of the way. In particular, our first contestable scrums for the season. Congratulations forwards you were epic at scrum time. Try scorers are highlighted below, but almost more importantly we had 21 tacklers who laid the foundations for victory.

Having emptied the tanks, physically and mentally, in the match last week it was a sterling effort to take on traditional rival Southland Girls. In the Highlanders Final St Hilda's were a complete unit; quality set pieces, flow between forwards and backs, ruck security, punishing defence. All of these aspects contributed to entertaining rugby. In 2021 the two teams played out a draw, with Southland Girls' advancing because they scored the first try. This match exorcised some of those demons.

Playing downhill in the first half our players combined for two fine converted tries scored by Anna Duncan and Anya Clark before SGHS industrious #7 responded with a powerful try. The first half ended with a beautifully struck conversion of a great try from Bridget Sinclair. Anya kicked all three conversions 21-5 SH.

Second half proved that St Hilda's were faster, stronger, and smarter and all players added value during the match. The fourth try was an all-powerful attack close to the ruck with the final piece of evasion delivered by Bridget Sinclair for her second try. Try number five was 45 seconds of amazing team work, with ten players handling the ball and all fifteen players contributing hugely to Charlotte Va'afusuaga scoring untouched. The final scoring movement featured Anya Clark sprinting and sidestepping 60m in a superb solo effort. The scoreline of 38-5 take the team to their target match for 2022.

Next Assignment - South Island SS Girls Final.

Netball

Last Saturday, saw our Senior A & B Netball teams finish their Saturday competition.  Both teams had important games, the A's were playing for bottom position of Premier A after a tough season.  The team started off well and maintained the lead for 3 quarters of the game.  College Red came our firing in the last quarter and were able to take the lead in the last part of the game, winning by 5.

Senior B's were in the main final of Senior A1, win the game and be promoted to Premier C.  After a tight first quarter and being down by 1, the 2nd brought a hard defensive game from both teams with a total of 4 goals being scored.  During the third quarter, Physed were able to stretch a lead to 8 but by the end of it, the lead was only by 5.  Last quarter, SHCS came out fighting and got back within 1 with only a few minutes to go.  Unfortunately, we couldn't take the winning goal.  A great game though and some amazing netball skill on display.

Four year 7's ran at Ariki Cup this week (Victoria, Iona, Georgie and Amber).  This a cross country race around kettle park and leads up to the Otago Primary Cross Country.  It was a fast starting pace and they all did really well. Victoria Aburn finished 3rd in the Year 7s.

Swimming

Well done to Eva Borkowski who set new Otago records at the New Zealand Short Course Championships this week. She made the new 17 years old Female 50m Fly Otago record and came 1st place in the 4x100m free relay, also breaking the Otago record! Well done Eva 😀
