Independent Learning Time (iTime)
In 2021 we looked at ways we could provide opportunities to build independent learning skills and provide an aspect of the flexibility which came through from the students as something they really valued during online learning. We were interested in finding ways to maximise the benefits of students taking responsibility to prioritise their time and the work that needs to be completed within the school structure.
The Independent Learning Time (iTime) was organised where teachers of the classes the students had on that day and time set work that could be completed independently. This work was set up in class earlier in the week.
Students had the flexibility to manage when and where (in a limited number of spaces within the school) they completed the day’s work.
Following these iTime days, we received positive feedback from both staff and students. We believe that having opportunities to make decisions on the pace and order of work is valuable in building active learners. We will be scheduling another opportunity for itime independent learning in Week 10.
The independent learning time (iTime) will be on Wednesday 2 April (Periods 2,3 & 4). It will begin at 9:40 after period 1.
For the iTime, teachers of the classes students have on that day will set work that can be completed independently. This work will be set up in class earlier in the week.
For this work teachers will indicate the:
Must Do
Should Do
Could Do
This will give students clear expectations of what is expected - (teachers will not set more work than a student would normally be expected to cover in one class)
During the timetabled class the teacher will be available to meet with them - this could be done online or in person, small groups or individuals. This will need to be worked out with the teacher.
All Students will stay on the school campus during itime and will have the flexibility to manage when and where within allocated spaces, they complete the half day’s work.
