Sports Update
Over the school holiday break ...
Year 9 and 10 Junior South Island Netball
Congratulations to both our Year 9 and 10 Netball teams who competed in the Junior South Island Netball Championships during the first week of the Term 2 break. Both teams had strong starts and finished Day 1 with three wins.
Heading into the top 16 on Day 2 meant tougher matches. Both teams won the first two games and then on to the quarterfinals where each team played Christchurch Girls' High School.
The Year 9s comfortably won 32-16 and went onto the semifinal against Cashmere High School. Again, an easy win 44-26 which led the way to the main final against St Andrew's College (STAC). This was a tough final, STAC applied tight defensive pressure on our attack which caused crucial turnovers during the first half. Our team worked hard to get ball back and to stay in touch, however STAC were too good, taking the win. The Year 10s lost their quarterfinal by two goals and then went on to lose against Villa Maria College on the last day. Their last game, for 7th place, against Marion, saw the team re-connect and work hard as a unit to ensure they came away with the win 37-36.
A massive effort from both sides. They were outstanding in their attitudes and fair play. The Year 10s were awarded with certificates for the sportsmanship over the tournament which is nominated by the Umpires. Well done to everyone.
Gymnastics
During the school holidays Sam Williamson and Charlotte Watkins travelled to Tauranga as part of the Otago Artistic Gymnastics Team to compete at the NZ Gymnastics Championships. Charlotte qualified for Day 2 in all four apparatus finals and won silver medals for Step 7 Bar and Vault which was a great achievement amongst tough competition. Sam placed 8th on Floor and achieved proficiency in Step 6 with an overall total of 52.1.
