Library News

Carrie Bouffard —

We had a lovely term in the library! One of the most enjoyable events was the addition of Tilly as a library dog each day at lunch. She has settled in beautifully and is getting many belly rubs and walks. I really love watching people’s faces light up when they walk in and see her, and I look forward to welcoming her back next term.

Another highlight was our Read with PRIDE! event to celebrate Pride month. Students had to read a book with a rainbow theme or character and write a short review. We had some wonderful entries! We also entered the Out on the Shelves display competition and the library was filled with rainbows and positive messages. I particularly enjoyed the posters from the QSA.

Our Term Two visiting writer was Louise Wallace, who is a poet and a founding editor of Starling, an online literary journal for young NZ writers. She worked with a keen group of young writers for a lunchtime session and I hope they found it valuable and interesting.

Planning has already started for Library Week next term and it is going to be heaps of fun. We will be exploring steampunk and how books can inspire us to craft and create. It will take place during week three and we will have a dress as your favourite book character day, so start thinking about your costume! This year we will be asking for a gold coin donation on the day and using the money raised to donate books to Kiwi Christmas Books later in the year. The organisation gift new books to Kiwi kids who would otherwise go without.

I am looking forward to snuggling up in front of the fire with some good books during the holidays. Here are some recommendations for holiday reading from our eBook and Audiobook platform:

Audiobook of the Week

The Guinevere Deception by Kiersten White

“Princess Guinevere has come to Camelot to wed a stranger: the charismatic King Arthur. With magic clawing at the kingdom's borders, the great wizard Merlin conjured a solution - send in Guinevere to be Arthur's wife...and his protector from those who want to see the young king's idyllic city fail. The catch? Guinevere's real name - and her true identity - is a secret. She is a changeling, a girl who has given up everything to protect Camelot...Deadly jousts, duplicitous knights, and forbidden romances are nothing compared to the greatest threat of all: the girl with the long black hair, riding on horseback through the dark woods toward Arthur. Because when your whole existence is a lie, how can you trust even yourself?”

eBook of the Week

The Left-Handed Booksellers of London by Garth Nix

“Eighteen-year-old art student Susan Arkshaw arrives in London in search of her father. But before she can question crime boss Frank Thringley he's turned to dust by the prick of a silver hatpin in the hands of the outrageously attractive Merlin. Merlin is one of the youngest members of a secret society of booksellers with magical powers who police the mythic Old World wherever it impinges on the New World - in addition to running several bookshops, of course! Merlin also has a quest of his own: to find the Old World entity who arranged the murder of his mother.

Their investigations attract attention from enemies of the Old and New Worlds. Soon they become involved in an even more urgent task to recover the grail that is the source of the left-handed booksellers' power, before it is used to destroy the booksellers and rouse the hordes of the mythic past. As the search for the grail becomes strangely intertwined with both their quests, they start to wonder... Is Susan's long-lost father a bookseller, or something altogether more mysterious?”

A secret society of booksellers with magical powers! How could anyone resist reading this?
