Baydon Harris - September 22, 2023

NZ Fashion Week took place between the 29th August to the 2nd of September. This is a celebration of fashion which showcases up and coming designers through to seasoned experts. This year the MLT Hokonui Fashion Design Awards exhibited designs from the awards earlier in the year.

St Hilda’s was represented by Elizabeth Grounds and Lucy Hilgeholt-Martyn. Elizabeth attended to see her winning garment on display at pinnacle week of fashion. She also had the opportunity to mingle with other designers from the awards, including Molly Marsh (Head Girl 2020), pictured below.

Lucy also had the opportunity to model her own garment in the Hokonui Exhibition. The experience for Lucy was quite different as she attended fittings and rehearsals prior to the event on the Saturday. Lucy is pictured below at NZFW on the catwalk.

Both students have gained valuable experience through their Textiles journey at St Hilda’s. It shows that there are many different paths and opportunities which students can be involved in by simply following their passion.

Junior Textiles

Year 10 have been working on their assignments throughout the year. The modules that started mid year showcased their work, displaying their first assignment in the Library. It has been awesome seeing the range of fabrics used to make the Tote bags. This has contributed to a range of experiences for the students.

Currently, the students are working on their Pyjama pants for their second assignment of the year.

Year 9 have been developing their knowledge of fabrics, and how products are constructed. Their assignment this year has been developing a Bucket hat. During Open Night there was a display showcasing some of the student outcomes. This assignment has been a challenging introduction to Textiles, the students learn to manipulate fabric and put their own stamp on design.

Coming up next term….

We are all excited about the Celebrate Design Awards and the HETTANZ Awards. There will be senior students representing St Hilda’s Collegiate School at both of these events. Good luck to everyone involved.
