2021 has got off to an extremely busy and exciting start. The school’s Athletics Day was held in Week 4 of the term. This was delayed a week, but proved to be beneficial for the girls as they had more time to get to know each other before participating together as a group. The day was perfect, the atmosphere was loud and the costumes spectacular. Congratulations to Havelock House for winning the house cheerleading competition and to our athletic champions; Olivia Besett, Neve Black, Bernice Cullen and Zara Geddes. Congratulations also go out to Renee Willis, who broke a school record in the Shot Put.

Our Summer Sports were underway early into the term and it was fantastic to see our students eager to get involved. From Challenge Wanaka to Cricket, Rowing and Touch, we have been excited to see the results of being active and playing with our friends. The department has also seen a keen interest in individual sports, such as Golf, Clay Trap Shooting and Orienteering.

As we come to a close on Term 1 and Summer Sports, many teams have achieved excellent outcomes. Our Senior Touch team won their first South Island Tournament, the Rowing Squad had 3 crews in A finals at Maadi Cup and the Senior A Futsal team won Otago Secondary School Champs. Our Intermediate and Senior Cricket teams both won their finals to represent the Otago/Southland Region in the National Tournament at the end of the year. There have also been great individual achievements while representing the school in MultiSport, Water Ski, Swimming and Athletics.

A quick update from the Sports Council. There has been a significant review of the SHCS Sports Blue Criteria. This will be released by the end of the term. It is hoped it will bring the Blues Award to be more school orientated and achievement is acknowledged to a wider group of students representing the school.

2021 Sport Prefect Report

Term one has started off on a high for sport at St Hilda’s. We have had many great results as well as participation levels at a high. Brooke and I have been focused on getting out and about in the school community and encouraging more girls to be active during lunchtimes.

This term the school had its annual Athletics Day, where colour flooded the Caledonian as the girls enjoyed themselves representing their house with pride. The house captains set a great example dressing up and encouraging each and every one. We look forward to Cross Country coming up in the first week of Term two! Earlier in the year, the 2021 Sports Liaisons were announced. These girls are the student ‘face’ of their given sport and help out where needed. It is great to have such a skilled group of girls to working alongside.

Brooke and I have started a lunchtime walking group called ‘walkie talkies’ where we go for walks through the town belt and in nearby areas on a Wednesday. This has been a good way to get some fresh air while getting to know girls in younger year groups. On a Friday during lunch, we have been running some fun games to further inspire girls to be active. During walk and wheel to school week, we had skateboard and scooter relays on the turf which were a hit! In Term two these will be run on a more regular basis as the Sports Liaisons are on board to help out. Term two will also see Les Mills ondemand classes up and running at school - Fridays before school will be a grit cardio class, and yoga will replace walkie talkies on a Wednesday lunch during the winter terms. More information about this will come out soon.

We have had excellent results across all sporting codes, as teams represented the school in various competitions and tournaments. Term two is going to be packed with winter sports taking place and we are excited to see girls of all ages in the school participate in these codes.
