Last Word - Lindsay Black
Our whole lives we are constantly bombarded with the question what are you going to do when you grow up? And for some of us, the answer to this question will soon become a reality. Trust me I’m sick of the question too but whether it's having your heart set on being a doctor from a young age or wanting to be a firefighter your whole life - it’s something we focus on and think we always need the answer to.
Well, what if from now on instead of focusing on just what you’re going to do, start thinking about who you want to be?
Thinking about the person we want to become is very different from what we want to do.
We should be able to look back on when we were at school and say we were considerate, courageous, and respectful.
If I was going to describe one of my friends to you I wouldn’t start with labels I want to be able to describe my friends by their values and ethics. For example, instead of describing my friend by saying she is going to study psychology, I would say my friend is determined, trustworthy, and loyal and these are the values that will take her where she wants to go.
The more we start to consider and care about other people's values the more we set a standard for ourselves and who we want to live up to be.
Seeing our family, friends, and everyone not for what they do but for who they really are.
I’m not saying to totally discard your dreams and ambitions of what you're going to do when you grow up. What I’m meaning is that focusing on the person you want to be will be the foundation of where it takes you. Your ethics and values will be the building blocks that inspire you into the right career path or wherever your future might take you.
Remember the impact you can have on people and the legacy you want to leave behind.
Stop stressing about what you’re going to do and really start thinking about the person you want to be.
