Tennis
In September Charlie Byers (Year 12) won the Tennis Otago Open, which was a great warm up for her to then compete in two International Tennis Federation (ITF) Tournaments in Auckland and Christchurch. Having obtained a Wild Card entry and winning her first two rounds, Charlie is the first Southern female in more than a decade to have gained ITF points. Later this month Charlie will make her debut in the Caro Bowl League which is a prestigious Auckland Competition where New Zealand’s top players compete head to head. She is the only female player south of Christchurch to be invited to compete for 2023. Charlie has also obtained direct acceptance into the December 18U Tennis NZ Individual Nationals in 8th seed position.
Rugby League
Secondary Schools' 9s Wrap Up - We had a good day over the weekend for our second Secondary School Tournament of the year. The standard of league was maintained to a very decent level throughout the day despite some challenging weather at times. It’s awesome to see the progression our youth are making in our sport as they are starting to become more accustomed to the sport. Big thank you to all coaches, volunteers, selectors, referees and medical staff that came down and helped make for a great event. Also, a massive shout out to Southern Zone Rugby League, The Lion Foundation, Sport Otago and Otago Community Trust for their continued support.
Congratulations to the following teams for taking out their respective grade.
17s Boys winners: Otago Boys High School
15s Boys winners: He Tauaa RLC
17s Girls winners: Queens High School & St Hilda's Collegiate Combined
15s Girls winners: Otago Girls High School
Touch
On Wednesday 18 October the Junior A Touch team competed in an inter-school competition with Queens, Otago Girls and Columba College. At this tournament, the players displayed their skill, teamwork and sportsmanship to a very high level. The team went throughout the day undefeated winning every game against each of the schools and then winning both the semi-final against Otago Girls and the final against Queens very convincingly. St Hilda's came away as the winners of the tournament. This was a great achievement that each and every one of the players worked hard for, and they should show great pride in the performance they displayed. We hope to continue competing in this tournament in the future.
Clay Trap Shooting
Isla Wilson competed in the North Island Championships and placed second in the Ladies Single Rise. Well done Isla.
Rosa Smith (Year 13) represented Otago in the women's team in the Fish and Game regional competition, with the team finishing in third place.
Squash
Well done to Delta Brenssell. Delta was runner up at the recent South Island Junior Under 15 (Invercargill) and she placed in the top 10 at the National Junior Squash Championships.
