Term 1 Sport Update

Rachael Parker —

Cancelled:  SISS Water Polo Tournament in Christchurch

Postponed: Otago Secondary School Athletic Champs. this has been moved to 28/29 October

New Zealand Secondary School Vaccine Requirements:  Over the past week there has been a change in vaccine pass requirements for school students.  While this is encouraging for all our students, we are still waiting for all the finer details, it is likely to not come into affect until at least 15th March.  In the mean time, all current requirements are still in place.

For any student that has tested positive, in isolation or is waiting for tests, please ensure that you tell your coaches/managers or sports department that you will be away for practices and games.  For coaches planning trainings etc, they would appreciate communication with them.

Swimming - Zonal Open Water Championships

Congratulations to Anna and Sophie Hutchens who competed in the Makos Zonal Secondary Schools Open Water Champs 2km race at the weekend. With 125 swimmers and lots of wind, it was a big race.

Results were as follows:

Anna - 1st in the Female 14-15 category and 2nd/66 female overall

Sophie- 2nd in Female 16-19 category and 3rd/66 female overall.

Otago/Southland Water Ski Championships

On Sunday 20th February, Jazz Allison (Year 10) competed in the Otago Southland Secondary Schools’ Slalom Water Ski tournament held at Perkins Pond, near Miller’s Flat. This year, there were 26 skiers from 13 secondary schools who competed across three age groups and on two slalom course widths - Novice and Championship. Skiers carve tightly through the six-buoy slalom course increasing their speed in 3km increments after each pass of the course. The starting speed is 40km/hr progressing up to 49 km/hr for the novice course and up to 58 km/hr for the championship course. Points are awarded for the number of buoys and the highest speed at which skiers completed the buoy turns. After the two rounds of high-level competition, Jazz finished in 3rd place out of six skiers in the Under 17 girls division on the championship course, with only 0.5 points between 1st, 2nd and 3rd places.

Multisport

Good luck to our Maddie Cockburn, Eve Kennedy and Lucy Robertson who are competing in the SISS Triathlon/Duathlon this weekend in Oamaru.

Water Polo

All four SHCS Waterpolo teams are showing their strength in the Otago competition this term. Games are played on Thursday and Friday nights at Moana pool. Thanks to the continued dedication of coaches Kyle, Angus, Natalie and Olivia, the Junior teams are stepping up and the Senior A team is dominating the Otago Competition. This week's games were no exception, with stand outs senior Honor Birks smashing the goals and junior Charlotte Aburn who seemed to grin her way through every goal. Great to have two of our strong senior players Tiana and Quilla coaching the year 7 and 8 intermediate team this term. Keep it up!!
