Junior Sports Profile - Anahera Koni - Golf

Congratulations to 13 year old Anahera Koni for continued consistent performances this year in Golf. Earlier in Term 4 we heard of Anahera making the Otago Women's team to play Southland in September for the Salisbury Cup at the Balclutha Golf Club.

This was an opportunity to test her ability to compete at the next stage for the province in the 8 person team. During these matches Anahera played at No. 6 for Otago, where she won her pairs game 6/5 and then also won her singles game 5/4.

A week later (24th September) she was selected to play in the Metro Vs Central Otago Ladies tournament at the Wanaka Golf Course, as another Women's trial weekend. Playing at No. 4 for this team she again had a great weekend winning both her pairs game 5/4, and then her singles game 3/2. What was special about this experience is playing alongside teammates and St Hilda’s Old Girls, Julia Oliver and Libby Harper, to win the fixture for Metro.

The Otago Matchplay Championships took place on the 22nd of October, after 18 holes Anahera qualified in 6th position of the Women's Grade. She then had a further 54 holes of competition narrowly going down to a fellow Otago team-mate in the plate division final.

The golf never stops, Anahera was then selected to play in the 8 person South Island Interprovincial Team that travelled to the Rangiora Golf Course (28/29th October). This time, Anahera played at No.4 for Otago and had a couple of very close matches. A half with Aorangi and close loss on the 18th hole playing against the Canterbury No.3 competitor.

Anahera competed in another tournament over the weekend at St Clair Golf Course (5 November). She played in the Girls Division and won the grade, shooting an 80 in the St Clair Cup.

With the above performances and experiences, Anahera has just been named to compete in the National Women's Inter-Provincials in Wellington. The five person Otago Team will travel at the beginning of December and play a week of tough competition, 36 holes each day, out at the Waikanae Golf Club in Wellington. Anahera will play at No.4, so she has been doing all she can to prepare for this tournament.

Good luck!
