Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori

Shannon Prentice —

Kia ora, Tēnā koutou, Nau mai haere mai.

Last week Te Kura o Hira Tapu celebrated Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori. Due to the actual dates falling during our benchmark examinations we celebrated a week early.

We had many activities for students to get involved in. During lunchtimes students were able to play Māori games, we had a colouring-in competition, and a showing of Frozen: in Te Reo Māori. On Friday morning students were also welcomed to school by Māori waiata playing as they entered the decorated Archway and received a small treat.

Students were encouraged in a whole school assembly to incorporate more Te Reo Māori into their everyday life. To assist with this, posters have been placed around the school with different phrases to use in Te Reo, and the karakia ‘Whakataka Te hau’ was used to start each day of the week.

It was a successful week and a continuation of our journey into strengthening the reo in our kura.
