Sports News - Fantastic results from around the South Island

Rachael Parker —

Winter Tournament Week wraps up:

What an amazing week we have had during Winter Tournament week!  Here are the results from around the South Island:

Equestrian - South Island Secondary Schools

It was exciting to see St Hilda's students riding and competing at the SISS event.  Over the years many school events have clashed with club events, so opportunities to represent the school are minimal.  This week, we had nine riders compete in cross country, dressage, show jumping and team events. A big thank you for all the parents that headed to Christchurch to make this event successful. Here are the overall unconfirmed results:

Olivia McDonald 2nd in Level 1 Dressage and Katie Wilson 6th.

Katie Wilson 1st (Level 1) 2nd (Level 2), Lucy Falconer, Ellie Templeton, Georgia Elworthy and Olivia McDonald all in the top 10

Eleana Daly 1st in 80cm Horse Class - Arena eventing.  Katie Wilson, Olivia Small, Olivia McDonald, and Georgia Elworthy all in the top 10.

St Hilda's gained 2nd place for overall teams in the Arena Eventing and 4th in Dressage.

Show Jumping: Isabelle Helm 4th, Olivia McDonald 5th, Eleana Daly 6th, Olivia Small 2nd, Arabella Daly 5th, Katie Wilson 5th.

Show Hunter: Eleana Daly 4th and Olivia McDonald 5th.

Olivia McDonald 3rd overall best rider in show jumping from all ages

Junior Basketball - Junior Secondary Schools Zone 4

The Junior A Basketball team had a fantastic start to their four day tournament with wins against Avonside 111-24 and Cashmere 63-55 on day one and a third win against Ashburton.  The team then played the eventual winners St Andrew's and lost.  This did take them to the top eight where they then played Middleton Grange (45-54 loss) and Rangiora.  With the win versus Rangiora (69-54), they played for 5/6th place against a spirited Kaipoi.  After four hard days, the group finished 5th which is an awesome finish and a great way to end the season.

Netball - South Island Secondary Schools

Results:

Round 1 Ashburton 50-23, Central Southland 35-21, Rangi Ruru 35-21

Round 2 Waitaki Girls 37-23, Verdon 39-21,  St Andrews College 30-33

The team made top eight, lost to Southland Girls 29-26 to play James Hargest in the 7/8th playoff and went down 32-33.  It was a great effort by this team and they should be very proud of themselves and the way they conducted themselves on and off the court. Eighth from 32 teams is a wicked achievement.

Congratulations to Ruby Flannery and Perri Hore who were named in the A Grade Talented Players group.

2nd XI - Chris Arthur Cup

It was a tough week for our 2nd XI Hockey team.  With losses through the first two days, the team finished with a good win against Craighead 2nd XI 3-0 and finished the tournament in 11th place.

Team manager Deidre Perkins commented that "I just wanted to say what a great week the girls had. The results weren't always in their favour, but they remained very chipper. The whole group did St Hilda's proud, very polite - and a lot of fun."

Rugby

The comment below is from the coaches after our Junior Rugby Team's final at the Highlanders 10s Festival in Gore on Friday. The team just lost to Central Southland in an intense final 20 -15.

"Well girls, what can we say. You saved the best until last. All of the games today were the best you have ever played. EVERY player stepped up! We are beyond proud of the effort from the whole team. That was a tough competition, and we proved just how good we are. The future of rugby is St Hilda's is looking stellar with such talent coming through. All YOUR hard work paid off today. Congrats to Jess today for MVP - as usual Jess, you just got on with your job, but to see you supporting Ella today each time she took a penalty run just personified team work and a 'never say die' attitude.

Take care of the sore legs and aching arms." - Dan and James

Student Achievements

Cross Country

Our very own Zara Geddes has come back from being in Australia representing NZSS Cross Country team.

Zara competed in the U20 Individual and Team event. Individually Zara finished 8th from a very strong group and the top results from the NZ team in this age group meant that as a team they brought home the Gold.  Zara then raced in the NZ U20 team relay and again finished with another comprehensive performance. Congratulations!
