Over the Break...

Rachael Parker —

Netball

Junior South Island Championships were held in Christchurch during the first week of the school holidays.  Our Year 9 & 10 A teams headed up for 3 days of tough netball.  Both teams came through day one on top of their pools with three wins each. With rain warnings in place, Tuesday was a day of the unknown. The Year 10s had a 8.30am game, it was cold, very wet and miserable. The team had an outstanding game in the conditions to take the game against Marlborough Girls. While all Year 10 teams were huddled under cover, the remainder of the games were cancelled. Results will be based on top teams from Monday. This shows how important day one is at an outside venue!

Both teams headed into day 3 with quarters, semi and final rounds. Quarterfinals were against Rangiora, the 9s won this 17-10 while the 10s lost 24-19. SHCS 9A had a tough semi final against St Andrews and lost 37-17, but pulled together in the 3/4 playoff against Villa Maria to be a draw and finish 3rd 21-21. This is a fantastic result for the team going forward. The 10s played Christchurch Girls in their semi round and won 23-18, they went on to play St Margarets for 5/6th and lost by one 31-30! To finish 3rd and 6th from 32 teams in each grade is incredible, all players, coaches and families should be proud of the netball displayed. Thank you to all those that came through and braved the weather elements.

Congrats to Ella Southby, Gemma Rowcroft, Bernice Cullen and Lucy Taylor who represented Dunedin and North Otago at the NZ U18 Nationals in Christchurch during the second week.
