Library News

The Librarians are excited to be bringing NZ Music Month to the Library this May! Our foyer display promotes a fabulous collection of musical literature including biographies and autobiographies of contemporary artists through to traditional Māori action songs, not forgetting a few fiction titles with musical themes running throughout.

Here in the Library, we love to make the most of community celebrations, using these to draw diverse groups into this space as we utilise our collection to respond to what’s happening around us. This month, we are working with the Music Department, Arts Prefects and their co-ordinator to present musical performances amongst our shelves. Students are warmly invited to share their musical gifts with us; if you are interested in participating in this promotion, please email Mrs Ranby (sranby@shcs.school.nz) or see your Arts Prefects for more information.

NZ Music Month celebrations will culminate in a music quiz, run by the Senior Librarians in the final week of May. There will be prizes up for grabs, so watch this space for details still to come!

Stan Walker’s journey to becoming one of Aotearoa’s most famous singers is an inspirational story of overcoming impossible odds.

What were the chances of success for a kid whose parents had both been in jail? Whose world had been filled with things no kid should even know about?

In this young reader’s edition, Stan shares how he had to deal with challenges that left him feeling like he had no hope at all of becoming someone. It’s a raw and honest book about how Stan found the courage to forgive his whānau, forgive himself, and go on to achieve his childhood dreams.
