Chapel Matters

How much water do you use each day? How much water do you waste? Each person in the world needs 20-30 litres of water per day for things like food preparation, hygiene, and drinking, but the average household in NZ uses 250-300 litres per person per day! We are so fortunate in Aotearoa New Zealand that we have such easy access to clean water, but this means we can easily take this essential life-giving resource for granted.

Every single day, almost 800 children die each day because of a lack of access to clean water. This year the 40 Hour Famine is focused on providing the world’s most vulnerable children with fresh water, through sustainable projects which will benefit whole communities. The 40 Hour Famine student leaders at St Hilda’s will be encouraging the students to support this (literally) vital cause this week through either getting sponsors and taking part in the 40 Hour Famine itself (using the booklets or registering online), sponsoring their friends who are doing this, and/or by voting for which teacher they think should do the “Ice Bucket” Challenge at the end of the term! And also, of course, by being careful with our own water use, and being grateful for the amazing resources we have here in Aotearoa.
