Hello and Happy Pride Month!

June is a time for us all to support, honour, and appreciate the rainbow members of our community. To celebrate in the library I am running a Read With PRIDE! event. Here's how students can enter:

  • Read a book with an LGBTQIA+ character or theme.

  • Write their name, the title of the book, and a one sentence (or longer!) review on a piece of paper and put it in the box near the dinosaurs.

Students can find a list of rainbow books in our library catalogue here to get them started, and some of these titles will be available as eBooks or Audiobooks, so they can take a look at our Wheelers platform as well! Out on the Shelves also has lists of books here if they are looking for more titles.

Reading is one of the most powerful ways we can build empathy and understanding toward others, so please encourage your student to join in and “read a rainbow” this month.

The event runs until the end of June and they can read as many books and enter as many times as they like. Open to both staff and students (parents and caregivers are also very welcome if you would like to participate)!

Books of the Week: All of these include LGBTQIA+ characters and would be perfect for the Read With Pride event!

Audiobook of the Week:

Autoboyography by Christina Lauren

“Fangirl meets Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda in this funny and poignant coming-of-age novel from New York Times bestselling author Christina Lauren about two boys who fall in love in a writing class—one from a progressive family and the other from a conservative religious community.”

eBook of the Week:

Pet by Akwaeke Emzi (Also available as an audiobook!)

“There are no more monsters anymore, or so the children in the city of Lucille are taught. With doting parents and a best friend named Redemption, Jam has grown up with this lesson all her life. But when she meets Pet, a creature made of horns and colours and claws, who emerges from one of her mother's paintings and a drop of Jam's blood, she must reconsider what she's been told. Pet has come to hunt a monster, and the shadow of something grim lurks in Redemption's house. Jam must fight not only to protect her best friend, but also to uncover the truth. In their riveting and timely young adult debut, acclaimed novelist Akwaeke Emezi asks difficult questions about what choices a young person can make when the adults around them are in denial.”
