Chapel Matters

On Sunday the chapel was filled to the brim with “old girls” as we celebrated our 125th with a service. It was amazing to hear them sing Lead Me Lord and Blest Are the Pure in Heart. Their passion and joy for singing the school hymn – with Sings Hilda joining in with the harmony – was definitely one of the highlights of the weekend for me!

Current and “old” sacristans and and “old” Head Girl processed in, while three past principals, along with Jackie, did the readings: Mrs Elaine Hesse Steel (formerly Greif), (1979-1986),Mrs Christine Leighton (1999-2007), Ms Melissa Bell (2008-2014). We also had a mix of old girls from different generations light candles to acknowledge the work started by Sisters Geraldine and Etheleen. The light of the candles celebrated their passion and vision for this task, our commitment to its continuation for the young women of the future, and the abiding presence of God with the Sisters, with us, and with future generations.

In addition, the current Sacristans led us in a thanksgiving prayer and “old girl” and past HOD of Languages Rev. Barbara Dineen led us in saying the school prayer together. Sings Hilda sang “King of Love” and the kapa haka group sang Te Karakia O Te Atua; both of these pieces were beautiful and added a lovely feeling to the service.

Bishop Kelvin Wright filled in for Bishop Steven Benford and spoke about the meaning of “Blest are the Pure in Heart,” reminding us that “pure” is about clarity, honesty and integrity of vision, while “heart” is about the will and intention. The founders of our school had a clear vision of providing education for girls, and had the will to see this come into effect through the creation of St Hilda’s.

Overall this was a very special service and it was a privilege to be part of it!
