Winter Tournament Week - Outstanding Results!

After 2 long years of covid affecting Winter Tournament Week, school teams around the country finally travelled to compete! It was amazing to see our teams enjoying their sports and representing the school with such pride and sportsmanship.

Hockey

Our 2nd XI headed to Ashburton to compete in the Tier 4 Tournament.  With early morning games the team were also able to travel through to Christchurch to support the 1st XI. The team started off with wins against Papanui and West Coast. They made it to the semi final where they lost 2-1. In the 3rd and 4th play off against Papanui High School, the team won to claim 3rd which is a great result!

The First XI competed in the Tier 2 Tournament called the Audrey Timlin Trophy. They had a great start with wins against Epsom Girls and Timaru Girls. After a nail bitter of a semi final which went into a penalty shoot out, the team played Marlborough Girls in the final. From the starting whistle our girls dominated and created huge attacking pressure. Marlborough never had a look in with SHCS winning 4-1. The team will be promoted into the Tier 1 Tournament of Fed Cup.

Netball

Our Senior A team travelled to Timaru for the South Island Secondary Schools Tournament. Our first round saw us play Waitaki Girls, Rangiora and Kaipoi High School. After topping this pool, the team went into another pool of Cashmere, Nelson Girls and Wakatipu. After a close game with Cashmere and the other teams we found ourselves top of this pool and into a semi final against Christchurch Girls.

In 2019, SHCS played Christchurch Girls in the main final, so it was going to be a tight game. It lived up to this and it was a great game with our team putting determination into every pass and contest. Unfortunately, the team lost by 3 and had to face Columba in the 3rd & 4th playoff. In the end, our girls finished 4th which is an awesome achievement and means that the team will head to Netball Nationals in October.

All the best for the next 5 weeks of training and the tournament. Well done to Gemma Rowcroft and Ella Southby who were named in the talented players group from A grade.

Football

The Lotto Sportswear Satellite Tournament was held here in Dunedin and what great weather they had!  After a few days of wins, beating St Kevins and South Otago, they came up against Cashmere in the semi final. The game didn't fall their way and the finished 3rd after beating Queens in the playoff.  Next year, this team loses 11 Year 13's, so we would be on the hunt for any student keen to give this great sport a go!

Basketball

Congratulations to our Year 8 Wildcats who won their junior basketball grade. Well done to the Junior A team who finished 2nd in the premier junior grade after a close loss to Columba.

Rugby - U15 Junior Tournament

The junior rugby team went to the U15 tournament in Mosgiel on Friday the 2nd. It was a great day out and the players and team as a whole made some great progress.

We started slow in our first game against OGHS and in the first half against Central Southland College. From then on the team began to compete for the ball more aggressively up front and with improved possession we used our pace to score. Highlights would be; Annie Sinclair kicking two conversions from out wide. Neve Black dominating the breakdown and Aya Moetaua scoring out wide. A great way to finish the season. Great to have student teacher Gemma Millar who plays for the Otago Spirit coaching for the day.

U16 Otago Metro Girls Rugby Team -

Congratulations to the following juniors who have made this inaugural rugby team. Elsie Homer, Aya Moetaua, Neve Black, Laura Hunter, Alexa Ross, and Molly Malcolm.

Clay Trap Shooting -

Congratulations to Rosa Smith who finished first in the ladies point score at the Wanaka shoot on Saturday and third in the ladies single barrel at the Alexandra shoot on the Sunday, Nicola Post also shot really well.
