Tolcarne News

After a busy few days last week, the Teacher Only Day on Monday was very welcomed by the girls! It was a quiet weekend at Tolcarne, with most heading home for the long weekend or having formals on both Friday and Saturday night.

The Year 12 and 13 formal on Friday was a success, with the senior students looking absolutely stunning! Our juniors looked on in awe, enjoying the opportunity to watch the walk in. After months of deciding on dresses, matching heels, hair and makeup, we were excited to see the girls all glammed up!

Chloe and her friend got ready at Tolcarne, with some of our younger girls helping them prepare for the evening! We had Lucy on hair curling, with the others helping to select nail polish colours. The van took two trips of girls down with Chelsea and Chloe, making sure we gave them the perfect formal send off! This was a great way to ensure the girls had a fabulous night, with the juniors feeling as if they were sending their big sisters off for the evening

The Year 9 after school activity on Tuesday was Ten Pin Bowling. There was fierce competition between the groups, all aiming for the 'Tim Tam' prize and of course bragging rights! We saw a variety of different techniques, some slightly more successful than others  This was a great way to burn off energy after school, along with trying a different activity. Next week we are making clay jewellery and there are plenty of other outings planned for the remainder of the term!

Koru this week was on for the Year 9 girls, further looking at our topic around emotions. We started the session by reading out a list of feelings, unpacking what each meant. This was followed by each student picking an 'emotion', demonstrating how this may look or feel. We expanded on these ideas by drawing them, expressing the idea onto paper. The drawings were put into a box, randomly handed out for a game of charades! Acting out what each emotion looked like sure was a challenge, but the group did a great job. All of the girls were brave in their acting, we may even have some potential actors in this cohort! Well done girls

On Wednesday evening we were lucky enough to have Professor Rhiannon Braund from Otago University come in and speak to us. She gave presentations to the junior and senior groups, around vaping and the effects on our wellbeing. This was a great opportunity for the students to hear more about this growing issue, learning about the side effects that we don't hear enough about. The image below is from her presentation, showing what impact vaping has on our lungs. The lungs on the left side are completely blue and healthy - working 100%. Whereas the lungs on the right have black scarring (caused by vaping), which show the lungs are impaired. Thank you Rhiannon for taking the time to further educate us on this topic.

On Thursday the JMC junior social was held at John McGlashan! This is always a very exciting event for the girls and it sounds like it was a great night

The new tennis court has been getting plenty of use, with hockey trainings and netball practices starting. It is a great facility which we are so grateful to have, especially in time for winter sports!
