Tolcarne News

Here we are at the end of Week 1 - how are we already in the final term?! We have a few weeks of 'normal' hostel life, before we prepare to farewell our seniors on exam leave.

Although Covid-19 restrictions have sadly canceled many events, there is still much to look forward to this term (made even more exciting with the prospect of longer days and sunshine)! The light in the evenings has been welcomed by the girls, who are now able to take walks after dinner - getting a snack or two from the dairy!

We were excited to welcome everyone back on Sunday afternoon, all with a story to share from their holiday, along with a beaming smile. I always miss the positivity and overall good 'vibe' 160 students radiate when I head home - I don't quite get the same enthusiasm from my sister and parents!

Over the holidays Molly Loe was selected for the Sparks cricket team. This is an amazing achievement which is extremely well deserved. She also made history in the weekend, being the first female to play for The Willows Cricket Club. There is more information included in the newsletter, or see the Otago Daily Times article here. Molly has put a great amount of effort into her cricket training over the years and it is fantastic to see her selection. We can't wait to see you out on the pitch in the upcoming season!

Also during the holiday break, Tolcarne hosted the Team to Table Hui. This was a catering conference initiative driven by Ange, Jodie and Ross for the Canterbury and Otago boarding schools. It was a huge success and all of the delegates thoroughly enjoyed sharing catering ideas with each other, touring kitchens and learning from the varied guest speakers about nutrition, allergen catering, budgeting, software, courage culture, workplace communication and dietary options.

We would like to thank our generous sponsors for helping us make this come together: Goodman Fielder, Nestle, Bidfood, Leckies, Kaans and Anchor. Tolcarne and John McGlashan helped cater for the event and everyone enjoyed delicious and nutritious food. We had catering managers and chefs from, Otago Boys, John McGlashan College, St Peters in Gore, Timaru Girls and Boys, St Margarets and St Andrews from Christchurch and 3 local University halls of residence, Knox, Salmond and Unicol.

Molly and Tash finally got to give the girls their Tolcarne merchandise this week! They have been working very hard on designs, colours, fabric - everything to develop the final product. Everyone is rocking their new Back Road jumpers - almost like getting out of one uniform and into another! A massive thanks and well done to Molly and Tash for successfully producing such high quality merchandise this year - it has been a lot of work, which has now paid off. Well done girls!

This week has been a short one, with most of the students heading home on Thursday. Online Learning Conversations have been held today - meaning an extra long weekend break and perhaps a chance to get study done for final senior internals and junior exams.

We hope you all have a great long weekend and get to enjoy some sunshine! Please remember to complete the wellness declaration form before returning to Tolcarne on Monday. This must be completed within 24 hours of your/your daughters arrival. The link is available in the email sent from Ange Rathbone. Thank you for your continued patience with our Covid-19 adjustments.
