Physical Education and Health Department

Congratulations to Mrs Cowie-Oliver who got married in the Term 3 school holidays!

Senior Physical Education:

With only 2 full weeks with our Year 12 and 13 students this term, time flew. Year 13 P.E concluded the year submitting their final internal, where they explored an issue in sport. Some opting to discuss the issue of transgender inclusion and gender equity in sport, with great displays of critical thinking shown. Practical sessions across the board had a focus on wellbeing and enjoyment before students headed into exam mode.

Year 11 students completed their P.E internal on Anatomy, Biomechanics and Exercise Physiology. Content towards this assessment had been explored in a variety of contexts throughout the year. Year 11’s finished the year by planning and leading a chosen sporting activity to their peers. Soccer and capture the flag in the town belt, we amongst these chosen activities. Great to see these students showing leadership potential.

Junior Physical Education:

A jam packed term for all. In junior P.E this term we explored a multitude of units. From Te Ao Kori, International Games and Ki-O-Rahi. We were lucky to have the expertise of Tash, from Otago University, to lead a number of sessions with our year 10 cohort in Ki-O-Rahi. The game of Ki-O-Rahi stems from the Māori legend Rahitutakahina and Tiarakurapakewai. Ki-O-Rahi is a unique sport as it originates from a story and demonstrates that the sport is more than a game. It is a tribute to te reo, ancestors and the Māori culture.

Alongside core PE lessons, students continued to take part in module rotations gymnastics, swimming and fitness modules. Well done to Victoria Aburn who broke the Year 7 Moana Pool run record that has been held since 2017. A rapid 5 minutes and 42 seconds!

Our Year 10 cohort experienced the annual Tautuku Camp in week 5. We were thankful for the good weather and all of the staff and parents that contributed to the running of this camp. Students enjoyed the outdoor activities, food and collegiality that emerged from this experience. Fantastic to see students engaging so freely without technology in the outdoors, a highlight for everyone.

Health:

Our health team consisting of, Mrs Gemma Cowie-Oliver, Mrs Prentice, Mrs Joint, Ms Harpur and Miss Geary, have continued to deliver relevant and thought provoking content based on common issues facing young woman today. Developing connections, wellbeing and healthy relationships is a common theme throughout our curriculum. We are well supported in our pastoral school environment with a wealth of knowledge and support from Marcelle our school counsellor, Tilly our wellbeing dog, deans, whanau teachers and subject teachers. All providing valuable input to our students well being.
