Library Report

How’s your Summer reading stash looking?! With so many recommendations coming in through the year, mine is looking healthy! The helpful staff down at the University Book Shop put a copy of Geraldine Brooks’ Horse in my hands recently - interwoven stories that span generations, putting systemic racism under the spotlight. Further tending to my historical fiction needs, John Boyne’s All The Broken Places will come in a close second on my list of reading priorities. I’m excited to start this one given my enjoyment of other John Boyne titles like My Brother’s Name Is Jessica, A History of Loneliness and The Absolutist. Boyne writes with compassion and realism, using straightforward language to make complex issues accessible to a wide audience. He is a regular go-to for me.

Foster a culture of reading in your household this Summer. Switch off from stimulus around you and sink into a good book to help you wind down after what has been a really busy term. Our young people need a community of support around their reading, so share your reading to encourage others to see how they too can reap the benefits. Whilst our school library will be closing its doors at the end of the academic year, you will find a fabulous collection available at the Dunedin Public Library that is free and easy to access.

I’d like to take the opportunity to thank all those students who have assisted in the Library this year. A special mention to Jessica Becker, Danielle Daley, Elizabeth Grounds, Holly Hesson, Phoebe Jacquiery and Sienna Wright who have been awarded their Senior Librarian badge after showing consistent dedication to the Library over the course of the year. These students are brimming with ideas to further develop the Library next year so watch this space!

Happy Christmas from the Library! May there be a book wrapped up under the Christmas tree for each of you!
