Well, what a year 2021 has been for St Hilda's Sport. It has been a fun-filled year of our students getting out on the court, the field, the pool, the golfing range, the ice rink and the shooting range.

Starting our calender year with SHCS Athletics Day is a fantastic way to bring the school together, for new students to get to know current students and to create house rivalry. This year we had a beautiful day and a high number of students participated.

As our Summer Term 1 sports began and the cross over into Winter, our Summer teams had a great time during Summer Tournament Week. It was topped off with our Senior A Touch team becoming SISS champions for the first time. This was a wonderful achievement and one that has been building for a few years.

The school’s intermediate and senior Cricket teams also qualified for National Tournaments in Term 4. Both teams played exceptionally well to get there and it was a shame that both of these were cancelled in December.

Our individual athletes such as Athletics, Tennis, Triathlon and Swimming had great results and our Rowing squad competed well at Maadi Cup with several crews making A finals. Our U15 Novice Octuple crew were also awarded 3rd in the South Island.

As Term 2 rolled on and the change to Winter Sports continued, the school was able to come back together for our Cross Country. The Winter Quadrangular Exchange was a highlight of this term, where our Hockey and Debating teams came first. We all were incredibly lucky to get this event in as the following week we went into Lockdown. This saw many events cancelled such as Winter Tournament Week and of course the flow on effects into Term 4 and National events.

Despite more disruption and disappointment for many students for the 2nd year in a row, the girls have remained resilient and looked for the positives of what remained for the year. As a department we were able to celebrate everyone’s achievements in a variety of sports through our Sport Blue Awards and Sports Prize Giving.

Our Year 9 & 10 students have just participated in Junior Sports Week which has seen students have fun in renegade hockey, volleyball, touch and indoor cricket. Our Term 4 sports have also been able to continue over the short term which is great to see.

A massive shout out to all our students that have given a sport a go this year and all the achievements that have been rewarded. Thank you to the coaches, managers, supporters, officials and organisations that have made 2021 a fabulous year.

Wishing you all a relaxing break and Merry Christmas,

Rachael & Erin
