Library News

The library was full of holiday cheer this term, with one Christmas tree made entirely of books and another decorated with handmade ornaments (featuring favourite book covers chosen by students and staff). It was lovely to have so many students cutting, pasting, and making holiday magic while chatting about books they love. Thank you to each and every library elf who made an ornament and best wishes to everyone for a happy holiday season.

If you are interested in supporting children in New Zealand who may not have access to books of their own this Christmas, then take a look at Kiwi Christmas Books. They are collecting new books to give to Kiwi kids “using the services of the City Missions, the Women’s Refuges, and other great charities around the country.” In Dunedin the books are going to Dunedin Women’s Refuge, and the collection point is the University Bookshop. UBS is even offering a discount for books bought there to be donated, and anything from board books to young adult novels is welcome.

One of my favourite things about summer is the extra time to read, and I am so excited to be able to support students’ reading over the holidays with our huge library of eBooks and audiobooks. These can be accessed anytime from our SHCS platform. Students can also find the link on our library catalogue page, along with instructions on how to sign in to the platform and use the app. I encourage all students and families to check out the wonderful selection of titles and perhaps download an audiobook (or two) to listen to together if you are planning a car trip during the holidays!
