Meet the Prefects

Madeline Bilkey - Liaison Community Prefect

In 2014, lots of things happened - some more significant than others. Frozen’s “Let it Go” was the biggest hit song, Kim and Kanye got married and the 2014 Olympic Winter Games were held. At the same time, I was rugging up in my big sky blue uniform as a wee Year 7. Or should I say, the uniform was wearing me! Coming from Maori Hill School, it was quite a change to what I was used to! Instead of trotting up the hill with my small red school bag, I was trotting down the hill swamped in a uniform, tie tied thanks to Dad. Little did I know, the first time trotting down the hill was going to be the beginning of the many slogs back up the hill with a extremely heavy bag, but most importantly, the beginning of an adventure that I am proud to say has been a significant and special piece in my jigsaw puzzle. I am so lucky for my amazing family who have supported me all the way. My lovely sister, Annabel, in Year 12 has made my time at St Hilda’s even better <3

We spend a lot of time at school - starting in Year 7, to be exact, for 39% of my life I have been attending St Hilda’s. In these years, who we surround ourselves with, what clubs we join, what sports we play and how hard we work, helps determine who we are. We enter school as one person and whilst we leave in the same skin, often, our ideas and dreams have changed. St Hilda’s has been a great influence in helping to shape me into the person I am today. The different experiences I have had here, culturally, academically, in sport, and not to forget, the amazing friendships, were some of the building blocks...and I couldn’t be more grateful for this :)

I have participated in a range of amazing experiences while at St Hilda’s. I have been able to continue my love for football, playing in the First XI Football team since year 10 in a team of awesome girls. I have played water polo, netball, volleyball and futsal (some more seriously than others!) whilst participating in clubs such as Amnesty International, Peer Mentoring, Kapa Haka and in particular, the Enviro Club. I enjoy running and getting lots of fresh air, and have participated in the Harriers Tuesday and Thursday lunchtime runs over the years. This year I am chairing the Enviro Club with the help Riley M, and I am super proud of the 25 girls in the club, and what we have achieved so far including the sales of more than 400 St Hilda’s Enviro Club Supermarket Bags. It is super awesome to be able to give back to the wider community, the Enviro Club and St Hilda’s.

It was a huge honour to receive the Community Liaison Prefect role for 2020. Hearing my name read out at prize giving last year was a shock to say the least, and I am very humbled to have received the role. I was comforted to hear that Georgie was to be my Liaison partner. I am so lucky to have her by my side - her bright, kind and positive attitude has meant that the slightly daunting tasks that we have undertaken, have been made that much easier. We are both super excited about “The Lovely Loo Project” which will see the toilet blocks painted over these school holidays, by Artist Frank Gordon - it will be awesome to come back in Term 4 and see the collation of the girls ideas combined with Frank Gordon’s flair! Sunshine Day has been another highlight - swapping blue for yellow, it was awesome to see the school shining bright. Seeing so many girls and staff (and Tilly) dressed in yellow, and big smiles on so many faces, was awesome - particularly after a lot of plotting and planning beforehand. I have learnt so many things in my role as Prefect at St Hilda’s - the art of perseverance, gratitude and the enormous amount of work that goes on behind the scenes to make a school great.

Next year, I am studying a Bachelor of Science majoring in Geography whilst taking Natural Hazard papers. I am hoping to eventually work in Civil Defence, or as a Natural Disaster Analyst. But who knows if this will change :) Regardless, I am super excited for what the future holds! Happy holidays everyone, you have all earned it!!
