Celebrate Design Awards

Last Thursday the Celebrate Design Awards were held at Otago Polytechnic. The award exhibition showcase’s student work in graphic, product and spatial design. A small group of student’s work from St Hilda’s was selected for the exhibition including; Alexia Jones, Maddie Cockburn, Poppy Johnston and Amelie Warlow. As part of the awards students in Year 13 are eligible to win a $4000 scholarship for their second year of study in an Otago Polytechnic design course. St Hilda’s students Frankie Roberston and Maia Lamb were entered for this.

Amelie Warlow was awarded a Highly Commended for her Memphis Inspired Coffee Table. Frankie Robertson was also recognised with a Highly Commended for her Brutalist Inspired Jewelry. The judges commented on Frankie's commitment to casting her ring in silver and developing polished promotional materials which included a promotional video.

Maia Lamb was awarded Top Product and overall Best Design for her butterfly kiosk (winning the scholarship). The kiosk was designed to help create awareness around the decline of the Monarch Butterfly in New Zealand. Maia’s project spanned across three Technology subjects including; Design and Visual Communication, Digital Technology and Textiles. The judges were impressed with Maia’s commitment to trailing and testing, as she submitted a 40 page workbook documenting the development of her ideas. Like Frankie, Maia also made her outcome with her kiosk currently being on display in the St Hilda’s Library.
