Languages Department

This year we have two staffing changes. With Señora Bromley studying part time, we have welcomed Señora Tremaine to the Languages Department.

She has spent most of her life in both New Zealand and Argentina and most recently worked at John McGlashan College teaching Spanish. Her students are enjoying their classes with her and she brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to St Hilda's.

The new French language assistante is not so new to St Hilda's. Émilie Lilley also worked here briefly in 2015. Émilie has spent the majority of her life in France, but also several years now in New Zealand. She comes from a small town in Normandy, whose name will be familiar to all - the village of Camembert. So small that it doesn't have Street View on Google Maps. Émlie is an experienced teacher and the French students are greatly enjoying their speaking classes with her as she shares her language and cultural knowledge with them.

A new development this year is the Year 7 and 8 languages programme. Students are now learning Māori, Spanish and French language and culture twice a week for a third of the year for each language. The year 7s have been with Mr Elwood learning Te Reo this term and the year 8s have been learning French with Madame Holtz and every second week practising their spoken French with Émilie.
