Year 7 P.E - Monique and Shannon

We've been working on team building and working together (like our school values Be You and Better Together). Students have had the opportunity to learn through the forms of games, team work activities, trust exercises and physical activity. It has also been a good chance for me to get to know the students and their individual needs. In our Swimming module, students have been applying themselves well and enjoy the fun challenge at the end of each session.

Year 8 P.E -  Gemma

We started off with teamwork and social responsibility, now moving onto looking at a unit on Games Around the World. So far this has included games from New Zealand, Malta and India.

Year 9 P.E

The Year 9s have been looking at social responsibility with some athletics themes and are now into sport education, whereby students take turns at modeling team roles such as coach, referee, captain.

Year 9 Module swimming: This is a safety swimming module, where students learn about safety techniques and what it might be like to be in an unfavorable situation on the water. This helps raise their awareness of their abilities and limitations in various circumstances.

Year 9 Gymnastics module: In gymnastics we have been building our skills necessary for developing gymnastics floor routines. This includes group statics and balances, mat skills, beam/vault work and prop manipulation with hoops/ribbons. All of this will combine into beautiful gymnastics floor routines which the students are currently working on.

Year 9 Fitness module: A lesson where we look into benefits of exercise and short and long term effects. We have covered circuit training, specific muscle groups and fitness testing.

Year 10 P.E - Shannon, Monique and Gemma

The Year 10s have been learning about what's involved in adaptive sports and having a go at a wide range of these activities. This has enabled the class to develop a sense of understanding and awe of some of the skills of the paralympians. The unit will culminate with a session playing wheelchair basketball at the Edgar Centre in Term 2.

Year 11 P.E - Monique and Shannon

Year 11 P.E have been working towards the understanding of energy systems and Anatomy. They are also working towards depending their understanding of societal influences on physical activity on their generation. Practically they have enjoyed exploring the Town Belt, venturing to the town Skatepark and engaging in other activities that their generation enjoy.

Year 9 Health - Shannon

This term the focus in Year 9 Health has been on the developing adolescent brain, and the emotional and intellectual processes of growth. Students have been encouraged to identify issues associated with adolescence and we are now beginning to investigate options, such as mindfulness, to support positive outcomes.

Year 10 Health - Kat

Students have been working on identifying 'signposts' in our young lives and when they begin to change our course. Students created their own games, informative videos and presentations offering advice to friends to help them make good decisions and allow putting these decisions into action through game play. Students have also been lucky enough to have the Mates and Dates programme come into their classroom. The programme builds students' understanding on consent, keeping ourselves safe and sexuality. The students are thoroughly enjoying the programme led by facilitators Rachel and Tiffany.

Year 11 Health

Students started their module with focusing on gratitude and mindfulness. We have explored different areas of sexual health and had Dr Zuzana Wheeler visit us with her expertise in this area. These health sessions have had a good deal of student lead input which allows us to deliver sessions that are real, needed and applicable to our students.

Year 12 Health - Cadyne

Students have been exploring gender stereotypes and the effect of media on young women. We watched 'Embrace' a powerful documentary on societal influences on women. Students used information from this to determine their own life goals and how they can empower themselves. Students were also exploring sexual health with Dr Zuzana Wheeler through 2 integrated sessions.

Food and Nutrition - Year 12 Food

The Year 12’s have been exploring sustainable food practices this term. We have learnt about sustainable practices and the greater environmental, social and economic factors that play a role in sustainability. We have also considered the benefits and limitations of sustainable practices through discussion and practicals using seasonal and local resources, visiting community gardens and making honey bee wraps.

This term we have focussed on investigating the Nutritional Issue of overconsumption of sugar, with a particular focus on sugary drinks and the hidden sugars in popular foods. We watched “That Sugar Film” to gain insight into the variety of factors that influence health and decision making in food choices and investigated the influence of various stakeholders in the New Zealand context that play a role in the issue. Practicals have been focussed on making easy healthy meals and also investigating the sugar content of popular sugary drinks.
